luca and Hotelbird both digitize the hotel guest journey: online check-in, digital guest directory, upselling, and payment all run on the guest's smartphone, with no app download. Both are based in the DACH region. This page is for you if you are weighing the two providers and want to know where the differences actually sit.
Hotelbird is based in Munich, has been on the market since 2015, and holds a strong roster of German brand hotels, including Motel One. luca is a German platform that brings hotel and restaurant together in one system: check-in, communication, payment, POS, and self-service shops.
Restaurant, POS, and F&B on one platform
Hotelbird automates hotel processes: check-in, payment, access, guest communication. A POS or F&B module for the restaurant is not part of the offering.
luca covers hotel and restaurant in the same system. Guests order and pay at the table, at the pool, or in the room via QR code. At Isla Brown Corinthia, a 165-room resort in the Curio Collection by Hilton, this created 180 additional order points and €12,500 in additional F&B revenue in one month. If your property has food and beverage that should earn its keep, this is the clearest difference. More on the restaurant page.
Payment and POS natively connected
Both providers work with Adyen. The difference is in the depth. Hotelbird integrates a payment service provider for the hotel side. luca brings payment itself: luca Pay runs natively on Adyen, with less than 1% card fee on all cards, no subscription, and 24/7 availability.
Because payment and POS live in the same platform, order, bill, and payment come together without detours. On top of that come terminals from €19/month and Tap to Pay, which turns a smartphone into a card reader. Hotelbird relies on partners for access and payment, with no hardware of its own.
Self-service shop and kiosk
The luca guest kiosk is the digital front desk: check-in and check-out, data entry, payment, and room key without a queue. The same building block runs 24/7 shops for drinks, snacks, and travel essentials, including contactless payment and age verification. luca supports you from concept to stocked shelves.
For Hotelbird, a dedicated kiosk or shop product is not publicly marketed (as of July 2026). Self-service check-in runs primarily through the guest's smartphone.
AI communication: chat and inbox
luca Chat answers repetitive questions automatically over WhatsApp and email, in multiple languages, and creates tasks when needed, such as "fresh towels." The luca Inbox gathers every written message per guest into one thread, so your team replies directly without switching tools.
Hotelbird relies on automated, personalized emails and push notifications. The WhatsApp channel is announced (as of July 2026).
When Hotelbird is the better fit
Hotelbird has real strengths worth knowing.
If you run a chain with an established PMS environment and deep end-to-end integrations into Oracle Opera, Apaleo, or HRS are the priority, Hotelbird brings years of integration work to bear. The provider positions this depth as its core and cites references like Motel One.
If a ten-year track record with German enterprise brands matters to your buying decision, that is a point in its favor. And if your property is hotel-only, with no restaurant running its own POS, you do not need the POS and F&B breadth that luca adds.
