Sushi Panda is a small, family-run spot on Leipziger Straße, in the middle of Berlin-Mitte's business district, with office and apartment towers on every side. The sushi is made by hand: nigiri, maki, bowls, and vegan options. Lunch is what sets the rhythm of the day. People from the buildings nearby come in on a tight window, some grabbing their food to go, others taking a seat. Whatever runs the register has to handle both at the same time.
Card payments had been going through luca terminals for about two years, and that part was working fine. The register was the weak spot. It was basic software on a computer in the restaurant, enough to ring up an order and stay compliant, but not much else. Want to change something on the menu, or see at the end of the night how the day went? Not really an option. In a place where takeout and table service overlap all through lunch, that meant working without a clear picture.
Since the payments side was already solid, the restaurant asked the obvious question: does luca make a register, too? luca POS was in development at the time, designed for small, owner-run places. Sushi Panda was one of the businesses that ran it in real service during the pilot. It has been rolling out to more restaurants since August, and the pilot turned into a customer.
The register runs on a tablet the restaurant already owned. Servers take the order right at the table. Takeout gets closed out on the spot, a table stays open until the guests are ready to pay, and the floor plan shows what's still out. Splitting a table takes seconds, which comes in handy when a group from one of the offices eats together and pays separately. Tips are built into the payment, so nobody is doing math after the fact.
The team updates the menu themselves. Adding a dish takes a minute, changing a price takes less, and it shows up on every device immediately. And if something comes up, there's someone at luca to call.
“I’m happy with it, and so is my team. It’s fast, it’s easy to use, and you pick it up quickly. We can walk right over to the guest and take the order there,” says Seefaldeen Hamid Shahoodh, owner and managing director of Sushi Panda.
At the end of the night, the register closes out with Germany's TSE and DSFinV-K requirements handled, and nobody is digging for numbers. Sales and orders are already in the reports. More than a thousand orders have run through the system so far, nearly all of them paid by card.
When lunch carries the day, the register has to move as fast as the takeout line and still keep track of the tables. And it shouldn't hand you extra work at closing. That's the job luca POS was built for: quick-service spots, cafés, bakeries, and small restaurants where both sides of the business happen at once. And it was tested in exactly that kind of setting.
